rue sainte-marthe

P1040210as you may or may not know, i have been traversing this entire city looking for an apartment.  it has really proven a great way to visit the various other parts of the city, away from the most touristy spots.  its the real neighborhoods that offer great little restaurants and shops that make the city what it is.

case in point, i found myself viewing an apartment along the rue sainte-marthe, located in the tenth arrondissement.  the street has an eclectic variety of restaurants and art galleries behind those closed colored doors, very much an artist community.  don’t be fooled, they all open up in the afternoon and evening.  the restaurant to the right, rotisserie, is very unique.  every night a local organization gets together and fixes that night’s meal, with the proceeds going to that nights organization’s charity.  i have been told that it has an interesting menu, but is actually very tasty.

right down from this street is the canal saint martin, and during the weekends the streets alongside are closed for people to have picnics and enjoy the waterside.  there are also canal boat tours that are very interesting to watch, as they are lifted through a series of locks and even make their way under the place de la bastille in a 19th century barge tunnel.

sadly, i do not think i will be taking this apartment, but i definitely plan on visiting this area again.
